Quick answer: Canva has no hanging indent button, and its rulers don’t have indent markers. The most accurate way to do a hanging indent on Canva is to split each entry into two text boxes: the first line in one box at your margin, the rest in a second box lined up with a guide 0.5 inch to the right, then group them. For one or two short entries, line breaks and spaces in a single text box are quicker.
Hanging indents matter most for APA and MLA reference lists, bibliography slides and research posters, but they also make long bulleted points easier to scan. This guide covers three methods that work in Canva today, which one to use and how to fix the usual alignment problems. For regular first-line or paragraph indents, see our guide on how to indent in Canva.

What Is a Hanging Indent?
A hanging indent keeps the first line of a paragraph at the left margin and indents every line after it. Both APA and MLA use a 0.5-inch hanging indent for each entry in a reference or works cited list, so 0.5 inch is the right default unless your instructor or publisher says otherwise.
Does Canva Have a Hanging Indent Option?

No. Canva’s text settings cover font, size, alignment, lists and spacing, but not paragraph indents. Rulers show element positions and let you drag out guides, but they have no indent markers you can slide. Canva Docs has an Indent button and accepts the Tab key, yet neither creates a hanging indent. That leaves three workarounds:
| Method | Best for | Precision | Easy to edit later? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two text boxes aligned to guides | Reference lists, citations on slides and posters | Exact | Yes, but re-split an entry if its line break moves |
| Line breaks and spaces in one box | One or two short entries | Close, not exact | Yes, until you change the font or size |
| Word or Google Docs, placed as an image | Long reference pages that won’t change | Exact | No, edit in Word or Docs and re-export |
Method 1: Two Text Boxes Aligned to Guides (Most Accurate)

This is the method to use for anything graded or printed. You’ll need a computer, because Canva rulers aren’t available on mobile.
- Turn on rulers: select File, then Rulers and guides, then Show rulers and guides. The shortcut is Shift + R.
- Drag two vertical guides from the ruler onto the page: one at your left margin and one 0.5 inch to its right. The ruler uses your design’s units, so a US Letter document reads in inches and a presentation reads in pixels. In a pixel design, pick a gap about four or five characters wide and use it for every entry.
- Type or paste the full entry into one text box and line its left edge up with the first guide.
- Duplicate the text box with Ctrl + D (Windows) or Cmd + D (Mac).
- In the first box, delete everything after the first line. In the second box, delete the first line.
- Move the second box under the first and line its left edge up with the second guide. Narrow it so both boxes end at the same right edge.
- Check that both boxes use the same font, size and line spacing, and leave the same gap between them as between lines of text. The alignment lines Canva shows while you drag help you match the spacing.
- Select both boxes and group them with Ctrl + G or Cmd + G so they move together. Our guide on how to group things on Canva covers desktop and mobile.
- For the next entry, duplicate the group, replace the text and repeat the split.
Tip: if you change the wording of an entry later, the first line may end at a different word, so re-split that entry and regroup it.
Method 2: Line Breaks and Spaces in One Text Box (Quickest)
For a single citation on a slide or a short list, you can fake the indent inside one text box:
- Type the entry and make the text box a little wider than you need, so Canva doesn’t wrap lines on its own.
- Click where you want the first line to end and press Enter to move the rest of the entry onto a new line.
- At the start of that new line, press the spacebar until the text sits where you want the indent. Five or six spaces is a common starting point.
- Repeat for each remaining line, using the same number of spaces every time.
Space width depends on the font and size, so the indent won’t be exactly 0.5 inch and it will shift if you restyle the text. Avoid justified alignment here, because it stretches the spaces.
Method 3: Build the List in Word or Google Docs
Word processors have a real hanging indent setting, which makes them the better tool for long reference pages:
- In Google Docs, select your references and go to Format > Align & indent > Indentation options, then set Special indent to Hanging at 0.5 inch. In Word, open the Paragraph settings and set Special to Hanging by 0.5 inch.
- Download the page as a PNG or PDF.
- Upload it to Canva and place it on your slide or page.
The trade-off is that the references become an image, so you can’t edit them in Canva and screen readers can’t read them. If your design will be shared digitally, add the references as text as well, for example in the presenter notes or a linked document.
Can You Do a Hanging Indent on the Canva Mobile App?
Only roughly. Canva says rulers are only available on a computer, so you can’t place exact guides on a phone. Method 2 works on mobile, and you can still move and group text boxes, but for a graded reference list it’s worth setting up the layout on a computer first.
Hanging Indent Not Lining Up? Common Fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Rulers don’t appear | Use File > Rulers and guides > Show rulers and guides or Shift + R in a desktop browser. Rulers aren’t available in Canva Docs or on mobile |
| Pressing Tab doesn’t indent | Tab only indents in Canva Docs. In designs, Tab is a shortcut for selecting the next element |
| Lines no longer line up after editing | Re-split the entry so the first box holds only the first line, then regroup it |
| The indent changed after switching fonts | Spaces resize with the font. Re-check against your guides, or switch to Method 1 |
| Entries drift apart when you move them | Group each entry’s two boxes, then group the whole list |
FAQs
Does Canva have a hanging indent button?
No. Neither Canva designs nor Canva Docs have a hanging indent setting, and Canva’s rulers don’t include indent markers. Use two aligned text boxes for an exact result.
Can I make a hanging indent in Canva Docs?
Not directly. Canva Docs has an Indent button and supports the Tab key for regular indents, but no hanging option. Use spaces for the lines after the first, or build the reference list in Word or Google Docs.
Is a hanging indent 0.5 or 1 inch?
APA and MLA both use 0.5 inch (about 1.27 cm). Check your instructor’s or publisher’s guide if they follow a different style.
How do I indent only the second line in Canva?
Indenting every line after the first is a hanging indent. Put the first line in its own text box, then align a second box holding the rest of the text with a guide to the right, as in Method 1.
How do I do a normal indent in Canva?
In Canva Docs, use the Indent button or press Tab. In designs, add spaces for a first-line indent or move the text box for a block indent. Our guide on how to indent in Canva covers every option.
The Bottom Line
Canva can’t create a true hanging indent, but two grouped text boxes on a 0.5-inch guide get you an exact, editable result. Use spaces for a quick one-off, and a word processor for long reference pages. To speed up the duplicate, group and nudge steps, keep our list of Canva keyboard shortcuts handy.
